Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited (MAEL), the engineering division of Monarch, a leading UK independent airline group, today launches its aeronautical engineering apprenticeship scheme for summer 2017.
The four year scheme, which originally began in 1971, has already produced over 760 high calibre engineers and this year the intake increases from 18 to 22.
The available positions will be across MAEL’s aircraft maintenance facilities at London Luton, Birmingham and Gatwick airports and will also include positions at its component maintenance centre. Luton has 6 positions available, Birmingham 10, Gatwick 4 and component maintenance centre 2.

About the scheme
The four year scheme will be based on the knowledge and practical requirements of the new National Trailblazer apprenticeship standards and specifically the EASA Licence Category A pathway. The new apprenticeship standards provided will concentrate heavily on the students gaining excellent hands-on skills and a rounded understanding of the whole of the aircraft maintenance field.
What they learn
Successful applicants will be initially based at our Engineering Training Academy at London Luton Airport where they will commence theoretical and practical training towards completion of the Level 2 Foundation phase.
Upon achieving Level 2, apprentices will relocate to one of MAEL’s bases where they will progress through the Level 3 Development phase. This phase is carried out in the aircraft maintenance or workshop facilities where apprentices can enhance their skills with practical “On-Job” training on either aircraft mechanical or avionic systems.
Whilst this apprenticeship is mainly practical, apprentices will also receive the necessary training in order to obtain the required levels of technical knowledge and understanding for an aircraft engineer. This is achieved by studying the modules of the EASA Part-66 ‘A’ basic licence category.
Minimum entry requirements
Minimum entry level requirements for applicants: to have or be expected to achieve 3 GCSEs at grade A*- C or 4 to 9 (or equivalent), which will include Maths, English and Science aged 16 or over; valid UK/EU passport holder with the right to live and work in the UK.
